High-profile Northland GP and former New Zealander of the Year, Dr Lance O’Sullivan, will receive $1.4 million in Government funding to develop a children’s healthcare app.

O’Sullivan’s company, Navilluso Medical, will use the funding to continue work on its iMoko app.

The app is set up so teachers at participating kohanga, daycare centres and schools can electronically send health information about students to a telehealth team in Kaitaia - where O'Sullivan is based.

That team then responds with a diagnosis, and plan-of-action for students.

The money, which will come from the Ministry of Health and ACC, is specifically for a two-year pilot project for those living in isolated places.

Conditions like eczema, head lice, strep throat and dental infections are easily monitored using the app - which, when appropriate, enables prescriptions to be sent directly to a family’s local pharmacy, bypassing the need for a physical doctor’s visit.

In South Auckland, Newsroom foundation sponsor Holden is funding a pilot programme at daycare centres in Otāra and Mangere. Reporter Teuila Fuatai spent a day at Yendarra Kindergarten with O’Sullivan to see how the project is working.
