Podcast: The Detail

Newsroom creates new podcast for RNZ

Newsroom has been commissioned by the RNZ/NZ On Air Innovation Fund to produce a new daily news podcast designed to explain the stories behind the headlines.

Called ‘The Detail’, it aims to help listeners dive deeper into the big stories to help give an understanding of what’s really going on. We will pick out the news that matters and explain it in detail and in context.

The Detail will be fronted by journalists Sharon Brettkelly and Alex Ashton, and produced by Alexia Russell. We will be drawing on not only Newsroom’s award-winning journalists, but the best reporters from throughout the country; along with experts in their fields.

RNZ’s executive producer of podcasts, Tim Watkin, says The Detail is the broadcaster’s biggest podcast investment to date. The podcast team will be based at RNZ and will be drawing on its resources and expertise.

Newsroom’s co-editors Mark Jennings and Tim Murphy will be executive producers. Jennings says podcasts are one of the fastest-growing media categories.

“We hope we can, in a less formal way, provide a bigger picture for younger listeners and anyone who’s interested in the detail behind the big stories,” he says.

“There are lots of people, particularly younger people, who now source news from non-traditional platforms. They are interested in news, but they don’t necessarily have the time to sit down and read extensively about a topic or subject. They also want to consume information while they are on the move or doing some other task.”

Our first episode is Monday April 29, and it will be available from 5am, free, on iPhones: Apple Podcasts, RadioPublic or Spotify, or on Android phones: RadioPublic or Stitcher.

Newsroom is powered by the generosity of readers like you, who support our mission to produce fearless, independent and provocative journalism.
