Newsroom’s Rod Oram wins business award

Business commentator Rod Oram won the award for best columnist at the Shareholders Association's annual journalism awards last night - for his analysis this year in Newsroom of the challenges for dairy giant Fonterra.

Oram, a contributing writer for Newsroom and high profile business and economic commentator on RNZ's Nine to Noon show, was praised for the quality of his Fonterra coverage.

Judges said: "Rod Oram’s columns on Fonterra were based on a wide variety of sources which along with his own considerable experience and analytical skills gave them an authority and gravitas which demanded that they be taken seriously. Written in an accessible style they added new information and therefore value to the reader’s understanding of what was going wrong at our largest exporter."

Oram's columns appear on our Newsroom Pro paid subscriber site on Fridays and are republished on the open Newsroom.co.nz site each Sunday morning.

He won the Shareholders Association award ahead of the other finalist, NBR's Tim Hunter.

In other awards, former NBR and now BusinessDesk reporter Jenny Ruth was named business journalist of the year after earlier winning the award for best news story for her coverage of Fletcher Building's travails.

The judges said of the Fletcher story: "Jenny Ruth’s story about the ex-Fletcher boss’s abusive internal e-mail was a standout news story of the year. It dealt with an issue of great importance and it had an impact. The story was dramatic, informative, coherent and balanced."

They said overall "her ability to produce consistently high-quality news, features and commentary show her to be a skilled all-rounder. Those attributes, together with the importance that attaches to her work on Fletcher Building, marks her out as an obvious choice as Business Journalist of the Year."

Rebecca Stevenson of Stuff won best business feature for ‘The rise and fall of CricHQ, the star backed Facebook for cricket’ and Madeleine Chapman of The Spinoff won Young Business Journalist of the Year for her work exposing labelling practices at fashion label World.
