Let’s do more for women’s sport

Seven months ago, Newsroom set up a dedicated team and section called LockerRoom to go where no New Zealand media has gone before - and concentrate exclusively on the many great stories of women in sport.

In a short space of time, LockerRoom has filled a big gap, finding and telling numerous stories of great Kiwi athletes, teams and achievements.

These are powerful stories, told mainly by women writers with deep knowledge and love of these sports.

Just last week, at the launch of the Government's new policy for Women and Girls in Sport, the Minister of Sport, Grant Robertson, gave us a mention in despatches:

"The development of Newsroom site LockerRoom provides a new platform to showcase our women athletes, coaches and leaders, and helps provide the visibility they deserve," he said.

Now, to continue our quest to put women’s sports up where they belong, we need your support.

A big thank you to all those who have read and shared stories like those highlighted below, and all of you who have aired support on social media for LockerRoom’s goals.

As women’s sports organisations and athletes who have sought financial backing will well know, securing funding through conventional methods isn't easy.

Many good organisations have embraced and applauded LockerRoom’s goals, but for one reason or another have felt unable at this time to contribute financially.

So, after six months of delivering a new level of coverage of women in sport we are launching this campaign to crowdfund from you, our committed readers, and ensure LockerRoom's future is sustained and expanded.

All money contributed for this LockerRoom campaign will go towards funding this section and its journalism.

Starting today, you can help fuel our mission with either a one-time or monthly donation. We sincerely hope you will consider contributing, at whatever level you can manage. To contribute, simply click the red "Become a Supporter" button below.

With your help, LockerRoom editor Suzanne McFadden and columnists Taylah Hodson-Tomokino and Sarah Cowley-Ross will change for the better the way women in sport are covered in our media.

We've enjoyed telling great LockerRoom stories and hope you've enjoyed reading and sharing them.  Here's a sampling of some of the highlights:

Sophie’s choice to leave her life behind
