Tourism in a northern Waikato town will receive a boost of more than $700,000 as part of the Provincial Growth Fund.

Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones announced the funding will go towards the Historical Maritime Park Marine development project in Paeroa this morning.

The funding will be used to help construct a wharf, install two floating pontoons, purchase a transport vessel, landscaping and a board walk connecting the pontoons.

It will replace the existing wharf which isn’t adequate for the growing tourism numbers.

Jones said the boost would invigorate tourism along the Waihou River and complement the existing offerings in the area.

“We need to back towns like Paeroa when they come forward with high quality ideas for boosting economic growth, especially when they have such wide community support,” Mr Jones said.

The Hauraki District Council has contributed $400,000 to the project which Mr Jones said was a vote of confidence in it.
