Jungle School: Beni’s milk tantrum

Orangutan Jungle School is a documentary series about a unique forest school in Borneo that prepares hundreds of young orphaned orangutans for a life in the wild.

The producers have provided Newsroom with some short videos that give a fascinating insight into the world of these endangered orangutans.

In this episode we meet Big-boy Beni. He is one of those kids who has a bit of a weight problem. He is three years old but weighs the same as a six year old! Like humans orangutans come in all shapes and sizes and they can suffer health-related problems if they are carrying too much weight.

His baby-sitters have put him on a minimal calorie diet which includes diluted, low fat milk – and Beni is NOT pleased! He escapes his forest classroom and goes to where the Group two kids gather.

He knows they have milk time at 3 o’clock every afternoon. Somehow he seems to think he can sneak in and pretend to be one of them…

The series has been made by Dunedin’s NHNZ and will screen on Choice TV from January 10 at 7.30pm.
