Jungle School: Mema and the termites

Orangutan Jungle School is a documentary series about a unique forest school in Borneo that prepares hundreds of young orphaned orangutans for a life in the wild.

The producers have provided Newsroom with some short videos that give a fascinating insight into the world of these endangered orangutans.

In this episode we meet Mema. She is a darling little two year-old nursery school student who loves learning new things. She is kind of the star of her class of “littlies”.

Her dedicated babysitters give her private tutorials to fast track her orangutan survival skills including how to find and forage for food.

When her babysitter encourages her to eat some termites, Mema hesitates but then discovers that they are actually quite tasty and nutritious!

The series has been made by Dunedin’s NHNZ and will screen on Choice TV from January 10 at 7.30pm.
