Zoom Out To Lunch

Bernard & Jarrod: 6.6m jobless; NZ Govt’s Whatsapp launch

Bernard Hickey talks to Kiwibank Chief Economist Jarrod Kerr about a massive spike in US jobless claims, and they talk about an inspiring Kiwi app to fight Covid-19 globally. Guest, Pie Funds chief executive Mike Taylor also joins them to talk about the massive market swings and hopes for recovery.

Bernard zooms out for lunch with Jarrod to talk about the record-high 6.6 million US jobless claims overnight and the resulting dramas on markets, which included a late recovery in US stocks.

Then they bring in ClearPoint chief technology officer Bain Hollister, who has worked with Sam Morgan and others over the last 10 days to quickly reconfigure a South African WhatsApp app to become a Government WhatsApp channel to help people get information on Covid-19. See more here in Marc Daalder's article.

Hollister says the plan is to roll it out across the Pacific and into other developing countries, including the Pacific, to help health systems cope better.

Then Bernard and Jarrod bring in Pie Funds CEO Mike Taylor to talk about the extraordinary moves in equity markets, and his hopes for recovery.

They discuss companies that have benefited from the crisis, and whether the New Zealand dollar and long term bond yields can fall further.

This is part of a daily 'Bernard and Jarrod Zoom out for Lunch' webinar series during the lockdown.
